Summary

In this paper, researchers show that microfabricated gold slides with low friction on hBN, similar to other van der Waals (vdW) materials. This enables post-fabrication repositioning of device components under ambient and cryogenic conditions. Park Systems’ SmartLitho was used to manipulate the arrangement of gold electrodes in van der Waals heterostructures. In addition to a detailed study of the mechanics of gold sliding using a Park NX10 AFM, they demonstrate deterministic control of the position of gold top-gates attached to stretchable serpentine leads, enabling detailed investigations of the effect of electrode geometry from a single device.
